Is Your Water Clean? Reverse Osmosis May Be The Answer!

Morris Heat and Air Reverse Osmosis Systems

Many cities within our service territory receive notifications from the government that the water being delivered to homes within the city is not safe to drink.  In December of 2019, for instance, the city of Okmulgee water tested above the EPA's guideline of 80 ppb for TTHMs also known as trihalomethanes.  This should be a concern to all homeowners and businesses within Okmulgee's service territory.  I assume it would include Morris, Preston, Nuyaka, Hitchita, Okmulgee, Schulter and other surrounding areas and towns outside of Okmulgee.  Trihalomethanes are known cancer causing contaminants that form during water treatment with chlorine and other disinfectants.  The total trihalomethanes group includes four chemicals: Chloroform, Bromodichloromethane, Dibromochloromethane and Bromoform. (Reference 01: EWG Website)

Among other effects of the public consumption of TTHMs include injury to kidneys, liver, increased risk of the bladder and malfunction of the central nervous system.  People can be exposed to TTHMs whenever they drink water that is contaminated by such compounds.  Apart from this, one can get exposed to TTHMs whenever they take a shower, bath, or other activities that can expose their body to the contaminants, though this is less likely to cause health problems than consuming TTHMs directly via drinking water.

How Do TTHMs Get Into The Water?

The precursors to TTHMs being introduced to public drinking water are the organic materials that react with chlorine in order to produce TTHMs.  An example of the organic contaminants that react with chlorine to form TTHMs are leaves from trees, decaying plants, fecal matter from animals and humans, and dead animals in the surface level of the water.  All of these precursors are also known as Total Organic Carbons or TOC.  (Reference 02: The Berkey)

How To Remove TTHMs From Tap Water?

If you are like me, you will never drink tap water again without having it tested first.  After several weeks of research, I have found out that there is a way to safely and affordably remove TTHMs from the tap water at your home whether or not the city water treatment process is successful in doing so or not.  I would like to say that I am priviledged to have several water treatment professionals in my immediate family that were able to answer a lot of questions I have regarding the notifications received from the government about drinking water in Okmulgee County.  I would also like to take the opportunity to say that 2 of the individuals work or have worked at the City of Tulsa AB Jewell Water Treatment Plant, and the other individual works in Miami Florida as both an overseer of a water treatment plant and an instructor.  It is also interesting to know that there is a lot of liability on people who work in the public water sector.  Their job can land them in prison if they are found to be the cause of a public health problem resulting from public drinking water.  According to The Berkey's website, Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Systems do an excellent job in the removal of the TTHMs in the water.  Reverse Osmosis is a process in which the dissolved inorganic solids just like salts are removed from the water.  Reverse Osmosis Systems have also been found to remove lead, fluoride, chlorine, chloramine, pesticides, detergents, and, of course, TTHMs.

Options For Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Systems:

Morris Heat and Air installs Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Systems.  With our triple protection filtration system, your water goes through three seperate stages for the ultimate in cleanliness and purity.  The prefilter removes chlorine and sediment down to .5 microns (1/16 the diameter of a human hair).  Stage two removes inorganic contaminants, chemicals and metals for the ulitmate in protection.  The post filter, stage 3, removes organic contaminants, additional chemicals, and any tastes or odors for a final polish.  Your new Reverse Osmosis System also comes with its own faucet that is installed at a location of your choice.  This special lead free faucet, communicates with the filters to deliver a status light that will indicate when the filters are "OK" (A Green Light), when the filters need to be changed (A Yellow Light) and when the membrane needs to be replaced (A Red Light).  The flow rate at the faucet is up to 1 gallon per minute and the projected membrane life is up to 3 years.  The filters are recommended to be replaced every 6 months or after every 750 gallons.  Usually the cost is less than $1000 and can, at times, be just a little over $600.

Things To Consider:

A few things to consider prior to having a reverse osmosis system installed on your home is to ensure that you have plenty of room under the sink.  Usually, the systems we install will not fit under a single sink cabinet.  The best location is usually under the kitchen sink cabinet.  It is best to have the garbage disposal under the left sink, but is not always necessary.  Stainless Steel sinks require removal and knockout of a designated hole in order to accomodate the lead free faucet.  This faucet has to be located on the right side of the main faucet so that the CAT6 cable that plugs into the filter board can reach the board.  We carry the replacement cartridges for our systems.  The pre and post filters are roughly $50 to replace every 6 months and the membrane is roughly $70 and requires replacement around every 3 years.  Once again, the light on your faucet will indicate when it is time to replace your filters and membrane based on the times listed above or usage.  The installation can take as little as a few hours to as many as 8 hours depending on the modifications and difficulty of the installation.  Keep in mind, every home is different so it is difficult to predict the time required to install your new Reverse Osmosis System.  The key to every home installation is to be patient and know that, once completed, you will have clean drinking water in the convenience of your own home.
